Bayview Library site a no-go? A Miss Vicky scoop!

Mon Dec 5, 2005 Miss Vicky

I heard through the grapevine tonight the DCR Phoneix proposal for a P3 library at Bayview is off the table. Of course, this has yet to be confirmed, but my sources are pretty solid. I'm sure there are plenty of folks who'll be relieved (neighbourhood types that frequent the Rosemount library, for example). If it's true, I think it's a good decision. At first blush, the proposal didn't look like a good deal for the city, and the library board should really think hard about its requirements and desires for a new central library before considering specific offers from developers.

While I wasn't very well informed on the matter, on the surface I thought it was a good thing to have the main library in the neighbourhood. Sure, Rosemount is right around the corner and it would be further to go to get to the library if they closed it as a result. But not too terribly far.

Though I guess I'd have to agree that the city should define it's requirements before moving on to implementation. Maybe that's what they've decided they have to do.

Here is a link to my earlier post on the issue. My objection wasn't really location - who wouldn't want the main library in their 'hood? My problem was the nature of the proposal, the compressed timeline, the attitude of the developer about the site and its surroundings, and the unimaginative proposed design. I was in Montreal's new library/archives recently and was impressed by the space, its accessibility, the use of public art. If we want to invest millions in a new central library, let's do it right - not as a way for developers to build more high-priced condominiums.

I'm incredibly leery of anything a developer is pushing so hard. Let's take our time and do it right--too often these things are rushed through and end up being a wrong fit in the end. The site isn't going anywhere. ;o)
