Bayview Library: Spoke too soon

Mon Jan 2, 2006 Miss Vicky

Apparently the HCA's sources in City Hall are not as reliable as we'd like. The Library Board is going ahead with public consultations on the possibility of a new central library. While the notice doesn't focus on Bayview entirely, you can bet they'd like to hear what folks think about the proposal currently under consideration. I got this notice in my inbox this week:

A New Central Library – Public Consultations

In 1974, the Main Library was built for a city of 300,000 people and was the hub of a six-branch library system. Today the Main Library serves a population of over 800,000 and is the research, distribution and administrative hub for 32 branches! Thirty-two years ago the OPL held about 500,000 items in its’ collection and circulated 2 million items; today it has a collection of over 2.5 million items with a circulation of over 9 million!

The OPL is launching a series of public consultation sessions to gather opinions about the future of your library system. A new Central Library is crucial in order to keep pace with Ottawa’s population growth and to build on the efficient, well run Library system we enjoy. These sessions will give you the chance to express your vision for a new Central Library and where it should be located

Those attending will be asked to participate in small group discussions aimed at maximizing participation and drawing opinion from everyone in the room.
The objectives of these sessions are to:
• Seek feedback – validate and improve upon the roles and functions of a Central Library in the context of a large urban Library system
• Gather input – on site selection criteria that will serve as a tool to assess all proposals for a new Central Library

To allow organizers to extract the highest quality information from the sessions attendees are encouraged to stay for the entire three-hour session.

Monday, Jan. 16 - Festival Control, City Hall - 6-9 p.m.
Tuesday, Jan. 17 - Room A & B, Cumberland Br. - 6-9 p.m.
