Taking the plunge

Tue Jan 3, 2006 Miss Vicky

I made a decision recently. A big one. And I acted on it this morning. I went down to City Hall and registered as a candidate for the 2006 municipal election.

It was a difficult decision, let me tell you. I have a job that I love, where I've been able to really make a difference for vulnerable academic workers. But local issues have become increasingly compelling, especially since I started this blog. I think we've done some great stuff with this site, but I figured it is time to put my money where my keyboard is. I'll write more about my motivation for running in the weeks and months to come (the election isn't until November after all). But I am optimistic and looking forward to the campaign.

My official launch will be next week - it's my birthday on Tuesday the 10th and I'm celebrating at the Roses Café on Wellington. Come by after 7, learn more about why I'm throwing my hat in the ring, and let me know what your priorities are for Kitchissippi and Ottawa.

I'll be launching a new campaign site shortly, and will be moving Miss Vicky's Offhand Remarks to a new URL. And of course we'll keep Miss Vicky's going through the campaign - perhaps with more guest bloggers.

Aw! Well, come and have some pakora and celebrate my birthday on Tuesday!

Something tells me that church men's club is on the 2nd Tuesday this month instead of the 2nd Thursday as usual, but if not I just may do that.

good luck :-)

I'd vote for you....

I heard the news on CBC this am - Kitchissippi (I may have goofed on the spelling) listed as a ward to watch. . .awesome! Very exciting!

Miss Vicky Jan 4, 2006 08:56 AM said:

Darn, we must have missed that newscast.

Pinklitva, way back in grad school I bet you I would never run for a political party. Municipal politics is non-partisan (thank goodness). So I'm a-keepin' my $100.

I'm still working on the kids to throw their support behind you, and not Winston...

The Webgeek Jan 4, 2006 10:10 AM said:

well, tell them that Winston has bowed out of the race and is putting his support fully behind Vicky.

Looks like the men's club is regular time, so pending any memory failures I should be at the Rose's for your kickoff!

And I'll take the opportunity right now to elaborate on why I'm supporting you. It is likely no secret to anyone who's read the site for a while that I differ from you on a number of key political issues. That having been said I'm sure that in likely half those cases the reason is simply that I haven't had the time to properly educate myself on the issues, and so the best I can do is form an opinion based on the information on-hand.

For someone who is not currently a politician, you certainly spend an awful lot of time informing yourself on the issues. You're engaged and active, and always eager to educate others. At times I feel I'm being better represented by you than my current incumbant. And kudos to you for it!

You obviously care deeply about this neighbourhood as I do myself, and while I won't likely agree with your position on everything nor you mine, I know you'll listen and I know you'll make decisions truly with the best interests of the neighbourhood in mind.

And even though you are a rapant leftie and I most certainly am not, as a good friend of mine said to me recently (who is a former rightie, born-again leftie) : at least lefties err on the side of plain, ordinary people. And there is a lot to be said for that.

dave Jan 4, 2006 06:58 PM said:

Well, her heart is in the right place, and it's a pity that's a distinguishing feature these days, but the stories there are of politicians being bent to the will of corporations and things like Monsanto...whether you're 'left' or 'right' you either just see that's wrong or get corrupt like all the rest....if I was in Canada I'd be very encouraging....looking at other blogs some contributors just use these spaces to go right ahead and waffle about their businesses....that's also quite objectionable....

Congratulations Vicky! You were great on the City's Transportation Advisory Committee and it is great to see new faces with fresh ideas and a new perspective putting their name forward.

I would be happy to support your campaign and help out any way I can ...

I would say that you can easily distinguish yourself from the other candidates with your passion for the community, knowledge of the issues, and fresh new approach.

Time for change. Time for a new voice.

Cheers!

Hey Robbie! Good to hear from you. I hope you can drop by the Roses on Tuesday, and we'll definitely take you up on your offer of assistance.

congratulations! i am so impressed by you and excited about the campaign. let me know if you need a volunteer..

The Webgeek Jan 5, 2006 03:01 PM said:

Thanks tmightyt!

Vicky's campaign site (set to launch just prior to the 10th) will have a volunteer sign up form (among other things).

We've got a long way to go, and we're still just building our team, so don't get too discouraged if we don't get in touch with you *right* away. The majority of the volunteer work will no doubt be needed at the latter end of the campaign.

In the meantime, feel free to pop in on the 10th and intoduce yourself. Vicky will be the one one glowing with civic pride.

I just sent email to liss76 and recommended to her that she attend your kickoff (1) because she probably like the Rose's food more than I (though I absolutely love it), and (2) as a stay-at-home mom she definitely needs to get out of the house more than I do!

So put us down for 1 spot for dinner, though it will likely be her and not me.

As for volunteer work, if there is anything the webgeek can pawn off onto peons I can offer my services on the IT front. Lots of PHP/MySQl (and more recently some PHP/PostgreSQL) experience, Mailman mailing lists, Linux/FreeBSD servers, etc, etc.

I invited a friend from my old dojo along as he lives in the ward, but he has to teach a class that night. But it does sound like you can count on another vote there, too.
