Take out in the 'hood

Tue Nov 1, 2005 Miss Vicky

Well, after much anticipation, our kitchen is about to be demolished. We've packed up our dishes and stacked them in the living room. Tonight's fun: cleaning out the 'fridge. I'm pretty excited about the upcoming renovations (although not the accompanying debt). The one drawback, of course, is being without a kitchen.

Those of you familiar with life at the Finishing School know that cooking is one of Miss Vicky's favourite things. Same goes for the Webgeek. So the next few weeks is going to be challenging - for the waistline as well as the pocketbook. We could use your help and recommendations as we search for culinary options. And of course, we'll accept any supper invitations that come our way (hint: Miss Vicky will be craving salad. She needs her greens!).

We packed up a week ago, so we've already been sampling the local take-out fare. We were already pretty familiar with the Vietnamese and Cambodian spots on our block. But we finally got around to trying the new Indian Takeout at 1104 Somerset West. It is primarily a sweets shop (they were cleaned out tonight for the beginning of Diwali, so they must be good), but they offer a number of dishes for take out (as well as frozen food). We've tried the Palak Paneer and the Chicken Vindaloo. Both were excellent. Palak Paneer (spinach with homemade cheese) is my favourite dish, and I've had it at pretty much every Indian restaurant I've tried, and this is by far among the best in Ottawa. Likewise the Vindaloo- spicy, not too greasy, and plenty of tender chicken. It's a wonderful addition to the neighbourhood, and we'll definitely be visiting regularly.

Any other places we should try?

Melrose Grocery (I think that's the name) Wellington and Melrose has some different Lebanese and very traditional dishes. Allways fresh and tasty, I eat there often.

Calzones from many places in LIttle Italy
Most East-Indian places (including Sri Lanken) have good pick-up food.
Istanbouli up near the Loebs has fabulous food at good prices!

And of course tip will so you'll always get good service, no matter where you go!

Excellent suggestions. I have had the food at the Melrose Grocery and it is indeed excellent. Plus the owners are pleasant and they always have ice in the freezer and fresh garlic when you need it. Haven't tried Istanbouli yet, but will have to!

Keep those suggestions coming.

And amckay? This former server ALWAYS tips!

John's Quick Lunch is great for home-cooked food. Their take out pizza is really good but most of their food is eat-in only.
